Purrumbete Highlander

Highlander, with over 400 registered progeny, was an exceptional male in Highlanderevery respect. He was a solid white full Accoyo specially selected from Don Julio Barreda’s Estancia Accoyo herd in Peru, part of an elite group of alpacas imported to Australia in 1990.

Aged about fourteen when he died, the last fibre statistics available in 2001 show a mean of 23 microns, SD of 4.9, CV of 21.3% and spin fineness of 21. These are great statistics for his age, but the real test of a stud male is his progeny.

Highlander sired over 90 certified males, including Coricancha Brujo, Parnabrae Brutus, Purrumbete Brigantine, Purrumbete Drambuie, Windsong Valley Braveheart and Windsong Valley Iceman. Normally one might expect 5% of the male progeny of a very good sire to be good enough to be studs, but Highlander had close to a 35% success rate.
